Catholics are not allowed to divorce except in extreme circumstances in their religion. Many would honor the rule of their religion rather than seek a legal divorce. And, the priests would most likely encourage them to do so.
I'm sure there are other examples.... But that comes to mind first.

Orthodox Jews, in Brooklyn prefer not to call the police. As a member you can be ostracized for not going to the rabbi for adjudication. However this has led to the protection of criminals, especially pedophiles as the rabbi often tend to want to hide scandals and in extreme cases send the offenders to Israel. Many times victims feel cheated.
Modern voices in the community have pushed against the soft punishment with some success but it is an uphill battle.
