Funny, with all this talk about Mexican immigration we forget how the Canadians are silently infiltrating Maryland
Blue, why then are so many auto plants opening up in the south of the US?
Pete

Same reason - cheaper overall labor costs. In Canada it comes because their medical benefits are cheaper than ours (friggin' Socialists ). In the South, it comes from being non-union. The unionized Rust Belt plants have priced themselves out of the market with their wage and benefits demands.

Most probably don't remember that prior to the unions when it came time for the model changeover 95% of the auto workers were sent home without pay while the remaining 5% setup the lines and stamping mills for the new (Chev, Dodge, Ford, etc.). Check the history of the union under Walter Reuther and you might find that there were many good and useful ideas that they brought forward. Of course ever since Saint Ronnie fired all the air traffic controllers - and put the flying public at risk - union bashing has become the favorite sport.

I must say that my views towards unions have changed a bit since I have had to deal with them at their headquarters level in DC. The rank and file are good folks, the bigwigs in DC are, for the most part, a bunch of unsavory characters. Then again, so is everybody else I deal with downtown. I think it's somehow zipcode related.

I think you'll find plenty of local union officers and members who aren't all that thrilled with their Internationals either.

I've had several experiences on national consensus standards committees on which I serve. Behind the scenes, I've had some very blunt threats from union big wigs if I don't cast a committee vote in favor of union interests. Of course, this doesn't comport with ANSI bylaws, but that doesn't seem to concern them. Needless to say, their strong arm tactics often backfire. FWIW, I've never had a management trade group engage in such tactics.

Management does not have to their influence in both ISO and ITU makes strong arm tactics unnecessary. I can't say I ever got threatened in the groups I attended.

Pete, I don't think you realize just how sly the Canadians are.
They enter legally, which allows them to hide in plain sight.
