"Exceptionalism" is little more than tool used to establish and maintain a status quo, in my mind.
To illustrate;
"We don't
need to change a thing. The way we do things is what makes us
exceptional."
In otherwords, it is little more than a mechanism employed by those who wish to resist any form of change. A psychological trick. It can be used in past tense as well.
As thus;
"America was at it's best in the
Good ol' Days. We were
exceptional then and we have lost that because of all that has
changed since then."
It boxes ones mind into a condition or time perceived as ideal and desirable, whether it really is/was.................or not.
You can find people in Russia who yearn for a return to the Soviet Union days because they feel a "loss of greatness (exceptionalism)" occurred when the USSR fell. The "Good ol' Days", when everybody feared them.
But, were they really better off back then?
