I'd do if I knew I'd be able to get out in one piece. I went to the Soviet Union (Leningrad and Moscow) for a week in 1981 on an authorized American Express tour out of Frankfurt. It was as crazy fucked up as North Korea appears to be.

I think as long as one took the authorized port of entry via Beijing on an official tour and just went along and followed the rules you would be ok.

Some of the ones who got imprisoned (like the Current TV reporters) were in Southern China near the North Korean border, an area where many North Koreans try to cross over. It seems like a common arrest point.

Gorky Park was written by Martin Cruz Smith as I recall, an American.

Quite true, still an interesting take on post Soviet Russia.
I also read some Solzhenitzyn earlier, as did almost everyone else.
Used to read a lot, my attention deficit and memory lapses make following characters and subplots a challenge now.

The principle character in Gorky Park, Arkady Renko, is the subject of 7 other books by Smith. I haven't read any of them though.

I did read Stallion Gate and liked it.

The cronyism and corruption never changes, only the characters do in reality.
That was what stuck with me.
