I would not say they prefer closer ties with Russia.

I believe they are suspicious of the other side, especially since that side
wants to deny them of their language.

However the majority of Ukraine wants visa free travel to Europe.

I'd like to add, Putin is indeed acting as a 19th century great power, using pretexts to cover land grabs, ignoring his own promises, playing stupid blame games and baldface-ed-ly lying while his proxies at RT News and internet shills pretend to give 'news' that justifies it. I don't think we've seen this sort of behavior since WW2 outside of a couple Chinese grabs and the internet thing is a novelty for international intrigue imo. It is a blow to the rule of (international) law, and if he takes eastern Ukraine will usher in a new - and uncertain - world system. Time to gird the loins.
