Their earlier stuff is the best, IMO, up to maybe Interview. Their label(s) put a fair amount of pressure on them to put out stuff that was more accessible to the typical rock, or even prog, album buyer. Unlike Fripp, who put out the dense and angry "Red" album and then dissolved King Crimson, Gentle Giant complied. Their late stuff was still very inventive but lacked the atonality and polyrhytmic nature of their best work.
