It is utterly fascinating: The US had facilitated Vlad ascendancy to power...Vlad had spent years in the KGB.

Really? Can you post a link to a definitive source that corroborates that?

US ran the Yeltsin show and Yeltsin handed over the show to Vlad.

There was no open objection to Vlad.

I'm not buying US facilitation in Putins rise to power.

As usual an awful job by BBC's Rosenberg.

No mention of the very influential Boris Berezovsky who had some connections to overseas voices.

However, the basic fact is: Yeltsin moved Putin from being head of FSB (Russian "KGB") to the position of Acting Prime Minister(08/09/1999). Where was the pushback from the US which had many advisers in the Yeltsin system?

Note the attempt in the article to make light of Vlad's FSB connection.

Trying to understand here. The U.S. facilitated Vlad's ascendancy to power by not interfering in the domestic affairs of a foreign nation

That the US made every effort to assure the re-election of Yeltsin is beyond doubt.

It is obvious the argument was made that Putin was sympathetic to western goals, most likely by Boris Beresovsky. Hence at that time no flurry of articles in western news papers playing on Putin's significant connection to the FSB.

It is important to note here, that Rosenberg, the BBC's point writer on Russia made no mention of Beresovsky.
It is laughable to write about Vlad rise to power without including Beresovsky.

Later Vlad raised his real colors. A failure of intelligence or a con of intelligence?

Never ascribe to malice what can be explained by stupidity.
