"Breach of Trust: How Americans Failed Their Soldiers and Country" by Andrew J. Bacevich.

The final paragraphs:

"Writing as the preeminent American exponent of genuine military professionalism, Marshall could hardly have stated his admonition in clearer terms: to abandon the tradition of the citizen-soldier, seeking to create an invincible offensive force able to win any argument, was to open the door to schemers pursuing criminal policies. Sadly, this describes what Americans have allowed to occur in our own day.

The all-volunteer force is not a blessing. It has become a blight. Americans can, of course, choose to pretend otherwise, but those choosing such a course cannot be said to love their country. Nor can they be said to care about the well-being of those sent to fight on the country's behalf."

'To Kill A Mockingbird' sequel to be published.
http://www.latimes.com/books/jacketc...203-story.html

"A recently discovered novel by Harper Lee will be published in July, her first since her acclaimed "To Kill a Mockingbird" was published in 1960."

"Publisher Harper announced on Tuesday that it had acquired the rights to Lee's novel, titled "Go Set a Watchman," which will be published on July 14. Lee said in a statement released by Harper that she completed the 304-page book in the mid-1950s and it was rediscovered by her lawyer Tonja Carter last fall." LATimes

Time to tackle this one. If you have not read Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment you are missing a great book. Took me only three weeks.

Starbuck should have used that rifle on Ahab.

Another one I should have read 30 years ago but am starting now: The Left Hand Of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin.

It is not the type of force. The fact is throughout our history powerful men have manipulated the US military to serve their narrow interests.

Completed in mid 50's, this predates the publication of Mockingbird. So calling it 'her first since Mockingbird' is deceptive.

Though longer, I understand it set in the same town as Mockingbird. Seems likely to me that this is basically an early version of Mockingbird, before a bunch of cutting and rewriting.

Perhaps with the able assistance of Truman Capote.
