I found a Brother laser printer for $8.95....I installed the Linux drivers so it is recognized but the toner light is on. If I get it to work I will let my daughter take it with her to college. Laser printers kick the crap out of those bubble jet printers.

I bought a non-working Vostok Russian Komandirskie watch for $5. It looks cool and has a neat sort of art-deco dial with a big red star at the 12 position.

I hadn't heard of that concept before (sealed drivers). From a quick read, it looks like they allow for closer quarters in the speaker enclosure. The drivers were certainly packed in the enclosure on these.

The '328' at the beginning of the second number on the woofer is what's called an EIA code. Referring to a list of such, I find the woofer was made by Utah, generally considered barely a mid-fi brand, though your speakers may vary. The rest of the number might be a mfg date, but it looks to be partially missing.

Those are alnico-magnet drivers, and as such are considered wonderful rare vintage technology of the past by some, for no good reason that I know of.

The sealed-backs on the mid and tweeter are to isolate their cones from back-pressure from the woofer. It's a necessary thing, though on mids a can or box enclosure is often used.

I suspect bass will be their Achilles heel. But they should be fairly high-efficiency, giving big sound with a 15 or 20 watt vintage receiver. Might actually be a good match with a low-power tube amp.

Thanks for the information. From the first listen, I think that they should be worthy of a little elbow grease and a new set of caps. Howard's Feed & Wax has done wonders for a few old cabinets around here. It appears that they have the old accordion surrounds, so no need for replacing those. Maybe I'll have some time for that around November.

There is a Stax SR-44 at the Salvation Army for $250. It would be $125 for because of the 50% discount. Looks complete. Worth it?

No. Electet series should be cheaper, plus the elements supposedly lose effective charge after they've aged. Not without a trial at a much lower price.
