Hell, look at our reaction to a handful of miscreants carrying boxcutters.
The American public is so woefully misinformed about anything nuclear/radiological, it's no wonder they get their knickers in a twist over the thought of a dirty bomb. While it may be the GOP and their corporate allies hyping the effects of a dirty bomb for their own political/financial gains, the reflexively anti-nuke Dem's have inculcated a fear of all things nuclear for decades.
