When I first heard this in The Last Waltz, I assumed it was an old country song that had somehow escaped my noticing it. Years later I found out that Robbie Robertson sat down and wrote this specifically for the performance of Emmylou Harris in the documentary. I still get chills when the camera pans over to Emmylou and she begins singing the second verse...
