This is a really delicate situation and conservatives in the Senate are in a tough position to make the cuts needed. They always need both Independent votes and 8 of the 57 Democrats to garner a majority. Then it's still fairly certain the Oval Office vetos going into the re-election cycle, because belt-tightening will slow things down for a few quarters.

We've got pain ahead if/when we cut, and even bigger pain ahead if we keep borrowing.

What are the real ratios we can support? Are they different from what a household can borrow?

If they admit to a 14+ trillion need for debt, Is that accurate, or is it really more when you add in all of the (growing) unfunded stuff? If GDP is also just 14+ trillion and we are at +/- 100% debt to GDP, how long does this work?

Do we start selling off/deeding over the National Parks and public lands to our creditors?

NO, I'm just standing with our president, who, in 2006, voted against raising the limit. He said that getting ourselves in the financial mess we (were /are) in was produced by a failure of leadership. Who knew he was a prophet?

Actually, I think this is the time to bargain for cuts in exchange for raising the limit. It has to happen sooner or later. We can't keep spending like this.

He, like the current opponents (excluding the Teabaggers), are/were simply making a political statement, knowing full well that it would/will pass. It is just like TARP. IIRC, the 2 Maine gals joined the Dem's in passing it while allowing the rest of their caucus to talk tough and vote against it. Everyone with a lick of common sense knew it was unfortunately necessary, but they wanted to talk tough. It's a parliamentary tactic that's as old as the hills.

I sure am glad that putting the regulations that kept us from that crash back in place is not an option so we can have another failure and jack up the debt some more. We need that free market to be a free-for-all.

Putting the tax rates for everybody back to where they were before we started fixing things that weren't broke is a stupid idea too I suppose.
OK,
Let's just pull the rug out of all the disabled like they do now in Az. Need a transplant? Go make your final plans.
Hit grandma too, you don't have to figure out either spend on heat or medicine if you don't have money for either. Just go pitch a tent in Az., plenty warm just don't need a transplant and nobody died on a rice and beans diet so there you go.
Finally home schooling for the kids, get rid of education for the riff raff expense out of the budget too.

I am sure Boehner and McConnell would approve.

So see ya at the bottom and start practicing your Mandarin.

Speaking of tax cuts. I was surprised to notice mine in my pay stub this morning.
This is the 2% payroll cut negotiated into the last tax bill by the Obama Administration.

It aint much, and I don't really need it, but I'll take it and I find it interesting nonetheless.

I guess because it wasn't a cut given to billionaires is why there are no props being given to the administration on FauxNews.

Thanks, Barry!

If you don't need it, you should send it back when you file. Better yet, maybe one of the mods here could set up a PayPal fund and find a worthy cause to support. We've been providing a significant lifeline to a member with a large family who fell on hard times in a another forum I frequent, and it only takes a little support from a few members to go a long way.

Hmm, near as I recall the defense budget in 2008 was about half what it is now. Gates wants to cut stuff, congress wants to fight him. Now there is a good place to cut. Also there is no reason why congresscitters need an income of $175,000 per year, how about the same cut for them they are proposing for government employees?
