Blue laws are just plain silly in this day and age. For example, I live in a semi-rural town on the northern fringe of Montgomery County, MD. MoCo is likely one of the most progressive, prosperous counties in the nation (for better or worse). Yet, the town of Damascus where I live is dry.

A ballot initiative appears every couple of years to discard this bizarre anachronism. Yet the traditionalists and do-gooders defeat it every time, much to the chagrin of the business community (particularly restaurant owners). As a result, there are no good places to eat in Damascus, yet there are plenty a few miles up the road in both directions (not to mention liquor stores). Without the margins from alcohol sales, nobody is going to open a decent restaurant in Damascus. A typical " cut off the nose to spite the face" reaction, methinks.
