Actually, I'm OK with that. Show that they hit the cop to express general negativity towards cops, or make an example of one, or some such, and you can tack 10 years onto their sentence.

Enacting any sort of law that confers special status or special protection to any organ of government or any individual member of it is antithetical to the idea behind hate crime legislation.

I am for this.
Furthermore, police unions to carry adequate insurance to settle civil lawsuits so the tax payers are off the hook.
