I remember Young trying to develop his own audio format a few years ago. At the time, his description sounded pretty "pie in the sky". I guess that was a pretty accurate hunch on my part. Still, an ultra high bit rate FLAC sounds viable as long as you have terabyte level storage or NSA level bandwidth.

Considering 1 gig was a pretty big hard drive in 1994 when mp3's were first released, I don't see a 36x increase in file size to be even relevant. Storage capacity has gone up 1000x or better.

Chesky's HD Tracks started out with a bang and he is always expanding it. Even 24/192 versions are available for a download these days. Locally there is a Blue Coast audiophile label website with hi-rez downloads seem to be doing well after a few years now as well.
Btw, if you sign up, both sites have free FLAC samples you can download.

I think he may have missed the boat with the player. Why would anyone want to carry yet another device around in their pocket when their smart phone will do virtually the same job? I don't think high bit rates are going to overcome the problems of earbuds and background noise.

The fact that old formats refuse to die (Completely) is evidence to me that not everyone is impressed with the latest and greatest.
Heck, this morning I was listening to Zappas "The Perfect Stranger" on Lp. The sound quality was amazing. (But, not exactly a format I can put in my pocket.)

So, you've got this FLAC on steroids downloaded to a bespoke player and you're listening to the music through...... earbuds?

There are some pretty good earbuds out there, but like anything else, you have to spend some coin to get them. Shure makes some fantastic in-ear monitors.
