hey is a 5u4gb the same as a 5u4g ? I want to drop one in on my single ended maggie...thanks! Besides the shape of course...

They are interchangeable, yes. Same basic circuit, different shape bottle.

The 5U4GB has a little bit more max current than the 5U4G, but unless they are being run all out they are pretty much interchangeable. You could always use a GB where a G was specified, but if it is being run at max capacities, you might not want to use a G where a GB was called for. Either will work in your Maggie.

thanks Marc...my Maggie as sort of high pitch hum that is annoying in soft passages. I do know if it is the pre-amps I am using, the amp itself, or a tube.
So I found an old Philco 5U4GB tube on Ebay for $5 bucks to see if that may quiet it down. Shot in the dark!

Are the filter caps replaced? They can allow ripple current in and create hum also.

Yep looks like the three caps next to the transformer replaced the can. The tube should do the trick.
