Halfway through War and Peace.
I am so surprised on how easy a read this is. Do not be intimidated by its length...that is a positive. If you read it make sure it is the Maude translation...they translate the French for you and it is surprisingly modern prose.
I have come to the conclusion that the great thing about the 20th century middle class is that most of us here live like the aristocracy did in the 19th century Europe....no mansions and serfs but leisure time and cars....and they had homes and land which they used for credit. Tolstoy's fictional families always have credit problems and debt...just like Americans do now. Of course they were just a sliver of the population of Russia.
