The announcers spoke perfect English without any accents, but there was a sort of eerie tone to the voices.

At a guess, they were subject to criticism for any suspected notes of irony, etc, in their reading of their copy. This would lead to them striving for the blandest possible style.

They sounded lucid and almost too perfectly non-accented, sort of like the lady on the what time is it phone service one could dial...but with a sort extra-terrestrial quality, like aliens who were trying to fool us by sounding too perfect.
