The Great Coffee Maker Hunt
Hello folks,
My Krups Coffee maker broke. I spent the better part of a day looking for a replacement. I wanted one that used cone filters, was programmable, and was less than $100.00. Cone filters evidently are not popular anymore. I finally bought a Cuisinart at Costco for $50.00. The only other candidate was an Oster at Target for $30.00. Ideally, I would have also liked to have a thermal carafe. I went back to filtered coffee after using a French Press for about 5 years. Do any of you have a favorite coffee maker?

Most anything but a Mr. Coffee.
A galvanized bucket would make better coffee than one of those.

BH we very recently bough a Krups that uses the #4 Melitta cone filters, makes fine coffee, of course I bought it off the 'net maybe they just don't show in the stores. It is a 12 cup machine but does fine even down to two cups, generally I make 10 cups which really amounts to 5 mugs.

Thanks. That is what I had and liked before the electronic controls finally failed. It made excellent coffee. The Cuisinart so far seems to work well. We'll see how long it lasts. The Krups, I had, lasted for well over a decade and had heavy use.

Bluestreak is your coffee aficionado around here. He swears by a french press and fresh ground beans.
I am a little less particular. I bought my last two coffee makers at thrift stores. I bought one with the insulated carafe, but my wife eventually nixed the idea. The pour through spout had so many nooks and crannies that it was almost impossible to get all of the coffee out. It seemed like a breeding ground for bacteria.
I think the current coffee maker is Black and Decker. We use Maxwell House French Roast and are always satisfied. If we are ever in the mood to sit down and really savor coffee, we will pull out the grinder and the french press. (Kind of like using vinyl for serious listening and CD's for the general soundtrack of life.)
Regards,
D-Ray

French press. Water hot, but not boiling. (Overheating the coffee causes it to release acids, making it more bitter.) Pour water on top of freshly ground beans, a brief stir, wait four minutes, press and pour.....Heaven in a cup.
Attached is are photos of my new vintage system on a rack made of coffee barrels and acoustic treatments made of coffee bags. (Burlap)

That is cool. I particularly like the Revox gear. I came very close to buying a Revox receiver or integrated amp at one point. The coffee stuff is a nice touch IMO. Do you have acoustic treatment in that room?
I like my French press, but I'm trying to save time, thus the need for a drip machine. I have both a glass and a double wall stainless steel 1 liter French press. I drink coffee all day and found myself pressing too much. I do think it is the best way to make coffee. I have an expresso machine, but never really liked expresso.
