Once when I was in Geneva on business Florence was with me. We dined at a small restuarant outside the city and got to know the host. He invited us to their mountain chalet for the weekend. I swear that someone gets up before dawn and sweeps the streets, you never see litter.

Canadian roadsides are spotless, at least they are in the Ontario area between Michigan and Toronto. I noticed just how clean they are when my vehicle developed an exhaust leak while driving there. My repair plan was to stop, pick up a can from the roadside, and strap it over the leak. It probably took a half an hour to find a single can. My passenger and I joked that in Detroit we would have found enough parts to build a second car in that time.

In German villages, women do, in fact, sweep their doorsteps and sidewalks in the mornings. Litter is pretty much unknown there too.

In my mom's village it was a Sunday tradition to sweep the street. She still does it here.

In some of the old European immigrant neighborhoods in Baltimore, women do the same.

Here in the Big Apple the owner of the premises is responsible for the sanitary condition of its sidewalk.

Fines can be imposed.

Public trash cans are everywhere. For the most part people use them.

We use to suffer from cigarette litter. For several reasons this has been severely reduced; one of them being the very high price of cigarettes.
The average Joe no longer buys a pack. The bodegas sells cigarettes from the
pack. Good! People smoke less cigarettes.

And BTW smoking is illegal in many public spaces.

That's been one good thing I've seen come about in my lifetime.

I can remember the bad old days when you'd go out to eat and the people at the table next to you would all light up when they finished eating.

Disgusting.

Then when they were done they'd put out the butts in what was left of their mashed potatoes and gravy.

I was just about to write about that! You're too fast, Pat!

Here's a picture. Beside Baltimore's famous "white marble steps", quarried locally and thus a cheap way to go, you can see another Baltimore curiosity: painted window screens. Some are quite beautiful and most were painted by generations of itinerant screen painters.
