The biggest threat to the world is desertification. This isn't a conspiracy or political talking point & people on both sides of the political spectrum know it.
If we (the world) continue to kill the soil & practice "modern" farming technics, the deserts will continue to spread faster & faster. I'm willing to bet that this is having a negative effect on our weather.
Most people don't understand or refuse to admit that plant transpiration is what provides us with our moisture. Here in the southwest, the Monsoon is created by the vegetation in N. Mexico. It is a complex & fragile system to say the least.
I & many of my Right Wing friends have always been real (NOT POLITICAL!) environmentalist types. We know things like coal, pipelines, & all this other garbage that the environmentalist wannabes, who do nothing with their own two hands, continue to push is stupid & will fix nothing. They never think for themselves & will continue to eat crap, drink crap, hurt the planet, & make a sustainable future harder & harder to achieve. It's not about worthless Hippie crap, peace & love, taxes, or any of the rest of the B.S. This is about real science & hard work.
If you fee so inclined, check out Permaculture (permanent agriculture). It is the way things should be done. It would have a bigger impact on all fronts than anything else we can do. Everybody will buy into it too. The movement has as many Preppers as it has self proclaimed Hippy types.
Here are some video links. They're kinda long, but you will see some really impressive projects -

There are many Permaculture Designers & lots of projects out there. Mr. Lawton is my favorite though.
Keep an open mind.

We can have abundance while improving our planet. It really is just a matter of not listening to people who want to play politics...($).
You have a large parcel of land with lots of biomass. Build a Hugelkultur bed with your grandkids.

So, nothing for overall carryng capacity vs population expansion? Don't see the possibility of sustainability with that going on.
The problem I have with self-sufficiency beyond the space it requires is that humans tend to thrive best when they can peacefully pool their unique talents and barter them for needed resources from others in the community.

That's a Conservative Republican technique trope, the other side consistently fails to call them on it.

I agree about carrying capacity. All these pollution/food issues come down to overpopulation.

The most striking example of this IMO is how the Klu-Klux Klan types, enjoying a resurrection with the election of the first black President, have come back under the banner of the "Tea Party".
