The USE of religion but not necessarily the content of the religion itself.
Convincing religious zealots a man was sent by God is the surest way to guarantee an iron grip on power and financial support.
"If God be with us, who dare to oppose us?"
Once the tyrant has people who think like that on his side, it becomes a thousand times harder to stop him. His congregants will refuse to question anything he says or does. His words become gospel, his actions interpreted as the hand of God.....no matter how horrendous. 220,000 dead or 10,000,000 dead makes no difference as their deaths were simply "Gods will".
AND ANYONE WHO DARES OPPOSE HIM IS........WHAT?
Think about that.
