All states have long since chosen to use the popular vote to pick electors. Trump tried to upset this apple cart with his coup attempt though.

Thom Hartman today outlines a plan, an actual in-the-works plan he says, whereby the Rwpublicans can and will steal the election even if Biden wins the Electoral College. Basically it's a repeat of the 2020 scheme, in which the certification of the Electoral results is blocked and the thing is thrown to the House of Representatives, where the Republicans win. Relies on some sharp tactics that ought to be legally blockable but apparently aren't, for example speaker Johnson refuses to swear in some new Democratic Representatives.
