I don't think this would ever be a possibility with current technology. In-flight weather conditions requiring changes in flight path or emergency evasive maneuvers cannot be remotely managed I believe.

It may be possible with today's technology to disable cockpit controls and land the plane safely in case of a hijacking since most commercial aircraft are capable of landing automatically.

In any event, it opens up the possibility of the remote piloting site being compromised. There is no real, that is, human-malice-proof, solution.

There is a joke in the aviation world about the end state of cockpits. I think it says that there will be a pilot and a dog. The pilot watches the gauges and the dog bites the pilot if he touches anything.

RIP to all those on the flight. My heart goes out to their families and friends.

A lot of those problems would be overcome with the technology doing into driverless cars. They're already on the road on an experimental basis. Then there's the technology going into drones.

I think the future is a hybrid system of human pilots and a backup system of remote piloting and pilotless automated flight control.

Having worked with computers since 1963 I would never get on such an aircraft.

I have a thread on the topic at AK with 75 posts until now.

Bass baritone Oleg Bryjak and mezzo soprano Maria Radner were on board. She lost her life together with her husband and her baby. An entire school class with 16 kids and two teachers has been killed.

Lubitz had a medical certificate for the day the crash happened. The authrorities found the document today torn to pieces in the waste paper basket in his apartment in Düsseldorf. He wanted to keep secret that he was a mental sick man.

Youtube:

Maria Radner - Mahler Symphony N°3; "Oh Mensch gib acht".

Terrible and senseless act by Lubitz. Condolences to all affected by this horrible tragedy.

So tragic, Chris! I've read reports concerning Lubitz being treated for a medical condition and that he had destroyed a medical excuse from duty on the day of the flight but what I read indicated that the nature of the illness for which he was receiving treatment and the reason fro his medical excuse hadn't been disclosed. Is there new information regarding Lubitz' condition? Was it psychiatric?

John

I have not listened to Mahler in a long while. I guess it is time.

Well, as I already mentioned - it was psychiatric. germanwings boss Spohr reported days ago that Lubitz had once to interrupt his pilot training for 11 months, now the authorities know that the interruption had been caused by a depression.

John I would really like to post more often here again, despite one member in this forum I hardly can stand, but there are very few topics here I can participate in and contribute to. And I am not the man who posts blabla in order to increase the post number.

Anyway - nice to meet you again folks.
