It's a combination of entitlement fantasies, a "creator"-ordained unlimited birthright entitlement to firearms of any type in any quantity, and a Constitutionally ordained entitlement to armed insurrection against Federal authority as the purpose.

"Americans of high-school age are 82 times more likely to die from a gun homicide than 15- to 19-year-olds in the rest of the developed world.

This stark discrepancy is often treated as a baffling fact, requiring some counterintuitive explanation. After today’s massacre in Texas, the state’s lieutenant governor, Dan Patrick, suggested that the problem may be that high schools have too many doors. “Had there been one single entrance possibly for every student, maybe [the shooter] would have been stopped.”
At other moments, we’re told that the problem is that we need to do a better job guessing which troubled teens may prove murderous at some point in the future, or dealing with the excesses of masculinity, or possibly the crisis of meaning and identity in the secularizing modern world. As always, though, there is a simpler and more powerful explanation of why there has been no similar school shooting in Germany since 2009; or in Canada since 2016; none in the United Kingdom since 1996—while conversely, more young Americans have died in school shootings in 2018 than in all the nation’s combat operations all over the world.*

The answer is almost insultingly simple and has the virtue only of being true: It’s the guns." David Frum for The Atlantic

With every new mass murder, I hope we get to the Australian solution. Buy 'em back. Pile them in a parking lot and run a fucking steamroller back and forth over the pile.

The combination of the ready availability of firearms to folks with impaired judgment and/or poor impulse control is tragically predictable.

There is a tremendous amount of disinformation about on the purpose of the second amendment. Here is an article with ultimate historical clarity on the subject.

An absolutely outstanding essay. Let me offer a quote of it's central argument:

Quote:
Hamilton’s and Madison’s original belief was that it was vital for the country’s security that all citizens have the right to keep and bear arms so that instead of a large, standing federal army, these already-armed citizens would be available to staff their well-regulated state militias in times of insurrection or invasion.

The idea that every citizen needed to have the right to keep and bear arms so that rather than a standing federal army, armed citizens would be always available to serve in his state’s militia in the event of invasion or insurrection was demolished when

Only a limited number of the state’s citizens were even eligible to join the militia and,
None of them were allowed to bring their own guns even if they had them, and
We now had that substantial federal standing army that the militias were intended to eliminate the need for

Once the country had a substantial, federal standing army and members of well-regulated state-operated militias were armed with guns supplied by the federal government and militia members were actually prohibited from supplying their own guns, the Second Amendment’s stated reason for protecting the rights of the citizens to keep and bear arms, namely the need for citizens to have guns to fight with when the militia was called up, disappeared.
The surrounding essay builds a strong case for this argument. Indeed, I would say an unarguable one.

But, in modern times, there was a lot of money to be made if people in their millions could be convinced to buy AR-15s.

The present loud and proud group who love their guns more then others, innocent children especially should be very evident by now. Until this fact sinks in and changes the narrative little to nothing will change.

I have read somewhere in the past that the intent of the NRA (and the gun manufacturers) to stall and sabotage any gun control legislation until it's too late to do anything about it. Over 9 million guns are manufactured each year with only 42% of households owning guns. So where are these new guns going?

This type of mass market squatting is exactly what happened after the so-called "assault weapons" ban was allowed to expire.
The NRA and 2nd amendment religionists thrive on the Federal authority nullification fantasy.
