[QUOTE=Twodogs;46335]They need to stand ol Julian up against a concrete wall and shoot his ass, then bring the private up here to Leavenworth and hang his ass.
He's just been arrested in the U.K. and I think charged with rape. There's something that doesn't smell right about this whole business. If someone were guilty of the kind of crime he's been lifted for, would they prior to that have gone out of their way to draw so much attention to themselves?
Also, how the hell did one private gain access to such a huge amount of classified information, and have the spare time to download it all?

I don't care what happens to Julian Assange. The mere fact that he has the balls to take national secrets, yes even if they aren't necessarily the UKs secrets but an ally of the UK, and post them on the internet makes me want to see a rope around his neck.
On your second point, about the lowly Private. On this one I am in total agreement with you. It should have never happened and he should burn as well.

Aye, there's the rub. Sounds like a good argument for military court martial with summary execution.

Apparently the Private took the data out of the base on a disc labeled "Lady Ga Ga" Depending on the format of the documents, 250,000 pages of documents could be downloaded pretty quickly from a hard drive. I have CDs that contain dozens of volumes of the Federal Reporter. At least 25,000 pages per disc, plus some software. These were produced 15 years ago. A burnable DVD could easily contain 250,000 pages of text documents (but probably not .pdf). On modern DVD burners, it would have taken less than ten minutes to burn the disc.
On the access issue, it was the result of a post 9/11 decision to share information across several agencies to make sure useful information doesn't fall through the cracks. The cost of that decision was that it gave thousands within those agencies access to the information. If the Private was in IT, or even a clerical data entry clerk, it was probably pretty easy to gain access.
Regards,
D-Ray

I knew Lady GaGa was evil.
Pukka, do you mean they believe it's compromised because of this leak, or they consider it compromised as SOP?

True, but still.
Anyone who knowingly, deliberately and recklessly just takes it upon themselves to disseminate large volumes of officially classified material needs to be severely punished. It is not up to a friggin' Private to decide what is "leakable" and what isn't. That's ridiculous. A pledge is a pledge, a violation of trust is a violation of trust. We can't have military underlings deciding what to tell the whole flippin' world. They are expected to follow orders and nothing more.

Ah so. Thanks Pukka, it makes perfect sense.
I do agree with you too Dave. I think he committed a bigger crime than Assange.
