Odd the OPs excuse for looking the other way on Kate Smith is his argument that by doing just that we can shed an objective light on American's racist past. In other words overlooking examples of racism is our way of defeating it........?

One has to remember that even in the 1930s and 1940s it was not only white people who heard those offensive songs; I am sure African Americans of the time probably did not appreciate the casual racism that was present in American popular culture.

The OP should stop supporting the Flyers or Yankees if modern criticism of an icon is too much for him to stomach.

People who look the other way don't need an excuse.

Racism isn't casual regardless of time or place.

Sports isn't what thead is about. Is God Bless America racist? Can't remember last time heard.

Agreed. At the time of the founding, the abomination that was slavery was well accepted around the world. And that included the enslavement of those sub-human black Africans. People like Washington and in particular Jefferson, decided that the nation would be established with the abomination in place. The catastrophe of the Civil War is on the hands of Washington, Jefferson and the rest of the founding slave owners.

We don't want to erase the past. But there are significant parts of the history of this country that should no longer be celebrated...that should never have been celebrated in the first place.

R.E. Lee, and the rest of the surviving Confederate high command, along with Jefferson Davis, should have been hanged.
