Now somebody wrote: "Congrats on 13K but "Sandy darling" is too much." It was meant as a funny harmless comment. In German it is "Sandy darling" as well, such a harmless expression and nobody would consider it insinuating, especially with this smilie "comment" characterising it as in a way funny-ironic. Okay, this joking was a flop...
In short - just another example for American inhibitedness? Or what's the deal here? Please an explanation.

I would dispute that Americans are inhibited.
We are though majorly prudish and very hypocritical about it.

The sort of overstated affectionate regard you were trying to express there might have come off a little better if you'd said '"catch up with our ever-popular friend Sandy" or something like that....

You must not have spent much time in the south - or around my wife. Half of the people she talks to on the phone are "darlin'"

In Germany it is possible to call a pal "Darling" in a slight ironic manner, without a homosexual or whatever indecent touch. If we strictly translate "Darling" into German it is "Liebling" and this term is generally reserved for kids and lovers. But even "Sandy Liebling" could be possible if in a friendly-ironic context. We take many things a bit easier here in Northern and Western Europe.
Bob it is the "The ending letter, new city" game, post #271. I edited my post #270 yesterday and asked him via pm to do the same with his post.
Anyway - Reden mit Amerika is sometimes pretty tricky...

I ask myself if this strict and stern use of "Darling" is also usual in the UK that brought out stuff like Monty Python...
