I have not been back to the Midwest to since 1988. I think California is the best if you can survive out here, which can be difficult. However my impression is that most people out here, even the ones in La Jolla, kind of understand how hard life is and that most of us are not that far away from the poorer neighbors we see around us. At least our State government is not run by a bunch of idiots. Even the Republicans out here tend to be a bit more moderate.

FWIW, the #1 place in 2014 is a feckin' Dallas suburb. I wouldn't live in Dallas if you paid me. Gawd-awful place. The lists included Columbia, MD and Vienna, VA, neither of which are close to being the nicest towns in suburban DC or MD. Both are faceless, congested suburbs.

And if you changed your mind I'd start a campaign to keep you out of East Dallas.

Don't worry for a moment about me moving to DFW. It cracks me up how the "Metroplex" somehow conceives of itself as the center of the universe. I guess they're confusing suckage with gravity.

I thought the Hill Country around Kerrville was nice when I was out there. Once the Hispanic population gets to the point where they outnumber the rednecks enough to turn Texas blue, and that WILL happen, it's just a matter of time, I might consider relocating there.

Somewhere between the humidity of the gulf coast and the aridity of west Texas there ought to be a zone that's 'just right.' Maybe Kerrville is in it. Hills will help...

The Hill Country is very nice. My wife and I just got back from 10 days in New Orleans, Cajun country, San Antonio, the Hill Country and Austin. Boerne, Comfort, New Braunfels, Kerrville, and Fredericksburg are all nice, though Fredericksburg is a bit more touristy than the others. It does get pretty damn hot in the summer though.

Low humidity though.
I remember riding my mountain bike around when it was 97 and I didn't have a drop of sweat on me. It was more comfortable at 97 than it is at 87 in Florida.

And if you just happened to live here, you'd be one of those center of the universe idiots we like to keep out of East Dallas.

No chance in hell I'd move there. It has about as much charm and appeal as Atlanta. Admittedly, both have lots of pretty women (if you can get past the big hair ).
