The law abiding citizens that owned guns obeyed the law and left them at home, or in their cars.

I would require it.

Anyone seeking entry would have to have in their possession an acceptable firearm, loaded and in good working order.

Those that do not have such a firearm would be required to rent one from the house, just as one is required to rent bowling shoes at a bowling alley if you don't have your own.
