Slippery Slope: Safety

How much do you value safety?

I am reflecting on chemistry sets. In the 1970s they were flammable, e.g. unsafe. There is shared pride between parents and kids that learned how to handle those chemistry sets.

When I shopped for a chemistry set for my daughter all I could find are sets that deal with colored water and gel pellets, e.g. panty liners.

If the safety camp is winning then please tell me how my daughter is supposed to learn about hazmat by playing with MaxiPads.

The demise of the chemistry set is a sad loss--and not least sad is the way few seem to care.

How is one to learn how to handle potentially dangerous chemicals if you cannot get them? The set I had as a lad even showed me how to make gunpowder. Becoming a world of wussies.

When I was a kid potassium nitrate was not available in the 'chemistry set' channels. Had to settle for sodium nitrate, which made a less energetic mixture....

You can't even climb on the guns at Fort McHenry or Aberdeen Proving Ground anymore.
