I'd love to be a lawbreaking rebel and visit there before resorts takes over.

My nephew finagled several graduate research trips there to study the interrelationship of music, place and politics. He ended up meeting a lovely Cuban girl, brought her back the US, and married her - a very lovely lass indeed. All of her family is still in Cuba.

BTW, he studied percussion with the primary percussionist on Ry Cooder's Buena Vista Social Club. The kid's quite a talent, having just earned a PhD in Cultural Geography from Arizona State last year. He's played in several Latin/Salsa bands with a pretty high talent level and made several CD's. If you're interested take a look at his website, focusing on the photoblog, music and geography links. Take a look at his C.V. as well, if you're interested.

I love Buena Vista and its off shoots.

Noticed your nephew was last month here in Brooklyn at a festival.

The old saying, hindsight is 20/20. At the time the USSR was a real threat, and if one would've said the Islamists could be a danger to us half a world away they would've scoffed.

Not saying right or wrong...

My point is that it was reasonable to assume that the CIA knew what the dangers were. And in reality a soviet friendly Afghanistan was not a threat to us.
