I don't see why the cop should have been disciplined or (forced to?) retire. This makes a good case for ban on assault weapons. How does anyone have a chance against someone with an assault weapon. Police departments typically send SWAT teams or robots against active armed shooters, not cops with sidearms.

In a case that drew comparisons to the fatal shooting of Trayvon Martin by a neighborhood watch volunteer, a white North Carolina man was found guilty of murder Thursday for gunning down an unarmed 20-year-old black man after complaining about “hoodlums” outside his house.

A jury in Wake County, N.C., deliberated for less than two hours before finding Chad Copley, 40, guilty of premeditated first-degree murder in the shooting death of Kouren Thomas in August 2016.

Yet another example of a bad (white) guy with a gun killing a good (black) guy without a gun.

He had a gun.... that is the same way Trump wants to equip teachers against a semi automatic weapon.
The only way a person with a gun would win against the shooter with a semiautomatic weapon is if the shooter allowed himself to be shot.

You must know that the good guys always win in the end.
The bad guy sees the good guy with a gun, drops his gun and then the good guy shoots the bad guy. Not even Hollywood would buy a script like that.

The other thing .... in many of the mass shootings, there have been citizens who had guns on them at the time. Not one of them shot the shooter for a variety of reasons.
The only time a shooter was stopped by the good guy was at the congressional ball game. And the good guys were trained law officers.

What happens if and when a teacher short circuits at school and decides to turn on the students is my question. And if the students have AR15's too?
This whole approach is as lame as the line about if everyone has to have background checks it would mean that the second amendment becomes invalid. You really have to be a dumbass to fall for that one.

It is sad state of affairs these ideas that even 3rd world countries do not employ are even considered at all in the USA.

I agree that one person with a pistol is going to be at a deadly disadvantage trying to close with and shoot a person with an assault rifle. He'll probably lose something like 9 out of 10 times, or worse. What you want is SWAT guys, with smoke/gas grenades, gas masks, and assault rifles of their own. And you want at least 3 or 4 of them. A team like that would have decent odds of getting the guy without one of them getting shot.

So, we don't want armed teachers. We want a SWAT team in every school. So let's say we do that. Surprise! Suddenly the trend is crazy killers shooting up churches.

If the solution is SWAT teams, we're going to need them in schools, in churches, at theaters, concert halls, stadiums, in all our workplaces, restaurants, nightclubs, malls, parks, and in the residential areas.

Doesn't sound workable. Trying sounds like a way to turn society into a prison, all gates and checkpoints and guards.

I favor

1) making it harder for crazy killers to get guns, and the more deadly the gun the harder.

2) working harder to find crazy killers before they go off, and intervene.

3) Working tremendously hard to build a decent society characterized first and foremost by loving kindness, where the situations that twist people into crazy killers are abated, not fueled, by the prevalent memes and norms.
