Slippery Slope: Narcissist

The internet nudgery has burdened me with thinking about the word narcissist.

I do not even have the muscle memory to spell the stupid word. Mississippi. I can spell that. C-ay-N-ay-D-ay. I can spell that. Carburetor. I still have gas stink on fingers.

But narcissist? What the hell is a narcissist? When I read the ad contexts I think holy fuck, you must mean curmudgeon, or hermit, or whatever the writers use to describe people that were tired of ads on park benches and paving bricks THIRTY YEARS AGO!

If you saw an old person quietly walking down an alley, would you think that person is a narcissist? How about if that person flipped you off when you tried to hand that person a flyer? Or even say hi to that person at a time that did not resonate?

Have a nice day.

You're a curmudgeon if you resent it when a word you don't know becomes current.

You're a narcissist if you think everyone should stop using it because you don't like it, and you're entitled to punish anyone who uses it in your presence!

Of course, whenever a new bad word comes along, some people use it to hit some other people who don't deserve to be hit. Not the word's fault.

I am always beautiful, I am always right, I am always good. Everyone will acknowledge this and do exactly as I say.........

.....or else.

That's a narcissist.

Thanks. I have increasingly heard and read the word over the past two years. Prior to that I think that I occasionally heard it for extreme cases, for example water cooler talk about Charlie Sheen winning. But now it seems like average people are calling each other narcissists. It's as though the word has replaced arrogant, which is the word that my generation used as a shade brighter than narcissistic.

The difference between arrogance and narcissism is a difference with a distinction. Projection of percieved superiority thru dominance vs egocentric self-worship.

From the Mayo Clinic:

Symptoms

Signs and symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder and the severity of symptoms vary. People with the disorder can:
  • Have an exaggerated sense of self-importance
  • Have a sense of entitlement and require constant, excessive admiration
  • Expect to be recognized as superior even without achievements that warrant it
  • Exaggerate achievements and talents
  • Be preoccupied with fantasies about success, power, brilliance, beauty or the perfect mate
  • Believe they are superior and can only associate with equally special people
  • Monopolize conversations and belittle or look down on people they perceive as inferior
  • Expect special favors and unquestioning compliance with their expectations
  • Take advantage of others to get what they want
  • Have an inability or unwillingness to recognize the needs and feelings of others
  • Be envious of others and believe others envy them
  • Behave in an arrogant or haughty manner, coming across as conceited, boastful and pretentious
  • Insist on having the best of everything — for instance, the best car or office
At the same time, people with narcissistic personality disorder have trouble handling anything they perceive as criticism, and they can:
  • Become impatient or angry when they don't receive special treatment
  • Have significant interpersonal problems and easily feel slighted
  • React with rage or contempt and try to belittle the other person to make themselves appear superior
  • Have difficulty regulating emotions and behavior
  • Experience major problems dealing with stress and adapting to change
  • Feel depressed and moody because they fall short of perfection
  • Have secret feelings of insecurity, shame, vulnerability and humiliation

Shit! It has lost its high-brow value.

Wait. Narcissists masturbate in mirrors?

If so then I can not imagine that dark of a corner. I have posted a dick pic or two and had sex beyond my darkest imagination. But to me that was part of growing up.

We have become too afraid of each other. Facebook lets us share our addresses. Perhaps we need more of that.
