"The Family"?

Anyone here read this book? I am told it's a pretty chilling read.

I read the first 100 pages of it last year. It bummed me out and I lost interest. I can't remember which happened first. I'm not thereby saying I wouldn't recommend it, but I'm so sickened by the Christian Right that I could only stomach so much of it.

That said God's Harvard is an interesting and easier read.

Hadn't heard of that one. Might check it out.

My friend said "The Family" was what got him thinking about what goes on. Before that he didn't really care about politics and such. Bought it because he thought it was a fiction novel that looked interesting. He read it and found out that the charactors are real people. Now, he's a lot like me. Scared to death of these freaks.

Thanks. Just reading the synopsis raises questions that I have long harbored about the religious right. These people claim to be "Fighting for Freedom" and yet they are so full of strict rules. "Girls are notified by e-mail if their bra straps are showing." "Students are required to fast forward through sex scenes in movies." Yet these are the same folks who howled when Obama suggested better automotive maintenance helps save gas, as if he was ordering them to pump up their tires. WTF? I just don't understand them.

They want the freedom to impose their orthodoxy on you and see no irony in doing so.

This really is the case. They are such strong believers(I hope), that they do not realize what they are doing. I have several very good friends who will openly state they subordinate all of their beliefs to the church. Simply put, if it does not follow what the church teaches, it MUST be wrong. There is no ability left in them to question. Yes, this worries me. But, they are good people tying their best.
Do we need to fix this? Only if it tries to intermingle with the government, you know the seperation of church and state.
And yes, that is a big issue dividing us americans now. But how would one fix this? We can blame falwell and pat roberts and the right wing power mongering politicains, but that doesn't fix it.

Maybe the question is, when did the war start? Where are its roots?

For the most part, it started in the mid '70's in Virginia with Falwell and Robertson. Yes, Virginia, the land of Jefferson, Madison and Monroe.

The Religious Right coalesced around Reagan because he (not a religious man) was willing to give them a seat at the table with regard to policy-making in the GOP (with respect to cultural issues) in exchange for their support and grass-roots political efforts.
