I agree but America was founded on the melting pot method. I strongly feel that if folks come here from abroad looking for the american dream they should at least speak the damn language ! But that's a rant for another day.

This is tricky.

We do not have an official national language hence I cannot fault anyone for not adapting English.
That being said, I strongly support a bill that would make English the national language. It would help unify our country and make things way more convenient for me.

i can't support this with fact, but from what i understand, one of the conditions for an immigrant to become an american citizen is to learn to speak English. correct me if i'm wrong here.

In February 07 A bill was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives that would have designated English as the country's official language and required immigrants to learn English before becoming naturalized citizens.
As it stands now this is not a requirement.

As I said, I strongly supported that bill.
(it went nowhere, Bush did not support it)

I completely agree!

My wifes grandparents came from Poland, didn't speak a word of English. They learned though because they wanted to be hard working Americans - no bilingual signs for them, no welfare checks. No expectations that someone owed them a favor because of their ethnicity.

As a sanforized citizen I beg to differ, one of the last things you are required to do is write an English sentence. I think the reason he did not support the bill was that he does not speak English.

PS: WSC is Winston Spencer Churchill but spelling it out made the signature exceed the 100 character limit.

I wish I could have met Churchill. I'd wager that it would have been a BLAST to have been around him "after hours". Doubt if I could kept up w/his drinking, but just to have BEEN AROUND him would have been an education in itself...

The man in my avatar is one I would have loved to have met - Sir John Alexander MacDonald, first Prime Minister of Canada. He alway had a glass of water on his desk in Parliament - except the water was straight gin.
