The phrase, however, is believed to have originated in an essay by Kevin Alfred Strom which was first published in 1993: "All America Must Know the Terror that is Upon Us". He wrote: "To determine the true rulers of any society, all you must do is ask yourself this question: Who is it that I am not permitted to criticize?"

My dad was courted by the Posse Comitatus in the 1970's. He declined to join. The FBI asked my dad what he knew about the local chapter, he told them they were "just a bunch of Rednecks who want to be the next KKK". My dad didn't have any more trouble from the FBI after this.
