He then returned to the rental car of the deceased, with a clotting kit in his chest pocket, determined that Smith had expired, and commenced a search for the silver handgun. After finding the revolver, he returned to the squad car, removed his gloves, extracted the chamber and rounds, rendering it safe. Note that he did not use the clotting kit, his only reason to return to the squad car.

Lab examination found only the officer's DNA on the revolver, and his DNA underneath a recessed screw on the body of the gun, along with only fingerprints of the officer.
