I've been on a big T Bone Burnett kick lately. I just picked up his latest, "the true false identity." The song "Blinded by the Darkness" carries some lyrics that are relevant to the discussion here:
Should the concept of sin be incorporated into the Constitution,
Is this really necessary,
Does it make you some what wary?
Sin should be left to the laws God,
Or to the laws of nature,
Can we really trust this to the legislature?
By the way, it is a terrific collection of songwriting and magnificently produced. I'd defy anyone to fit this music into any cookie-cutter mold.
