According to a presentation on PBS, the slavery interests had almost literally beaten the abolitionists into irrelevance when Harriet Beecher Stowe published "Uncle Toms Cabin" and that brought a virtual hurricane of international attention and support back to reviving the movement against US moneyed support of what was referred as "the peculiar institution".
