McCain is afraid he'll lose votes from the "homophobe and religious fanatic" segment of his parties base. Ollie North is just an old school, has been, Reaganite hack, idealogue who refuses to move ahead into the twenty first century.
Alexander the Great conquered most of known world, (In his time.), with an army full of queers, and he did it that way deliberately. It has absolutely and utterly nothing to do with an armies ability to fight. Nothing. And the modern military brass knows this. (Hell, military leaders of the past probably knew it, but kept it to themselves because at the time it would have been political suicide.)
DADT needs to go away, it's a rediculous, arcane mindset that serves no usefull purpose, other than to protect xenophobes from having to deal with change.
