A third party, if it's something split from the GOP, could be a big help to the Democrats.
A non-Trump 'Republican' spin-off gives Republicans who don't like Trump somewhere to go besides the Dem offering. The question is, what would Republican Trump dislikers do if the third party wasn't there. They might vote Trump anyway, or vote for the Dem, or stay home. Depending on how the split went, such a party could be good or bad for Trump.

A more center-left party that steals Dem votes probably elects Trump.
