We can talk about Lee's personality and history in endless detail, but the main thing is he was the Confederate commander, a key figure in the rebellion that defended slavery. Your cry that there is some 'erasure out of existence' is a gross exaggeration. Lee will exist in history, as he should. But according him a central place of prominence and honor in our cities was a frank exercise in white supremacy--tangible symbolism that such supremacy continued, despite the outcome of the civil war. That symbolism is now being terminated, as it should be. Sorry if it upsets you for some reason.
ON EDIT: I acknowledge your second post, which says rightly that such symbolism 'must go.'
