I am not so sure that there is going to be a big effort to force compliance.
Owners may not want to and it may be more trouble than it is worth. It is not the consumer's fault that VW lied to them....

I hardly doubt this is the end of VW. Toyota and GM are still around. Plus just think of all the Audi and VW dealers that need to keep that repair money coming in so they can fix all those "marvels...

The environmentally politically incorrect part of me does kind of like the idea of always passing the California smog test. If I had a VW that was running well I would not be in a rush for the recall.

Well since they have a poor reliability record VW probably wanted to spare their customers trips to the dealer to deal with emission problems since they have to go there all the time for engine...
