It's amazing to me that there was any drama at all. :(

A silver lining.

They've decided at last to officially detach them themselves from the deplorables. Time will tell if it's a difference with a distinction.

Pio1980,

Can you help me understand this thread? Please be honest. I will be.

I have come to respect the openness of Southern US racism. There is a comfort in knowing what tomorrow brings. Northern US racism is ugly because it is underground. Southerners know when to press to their clothes. Northerners rarely do.

Of course I have oversimplified the issue. This thread reminds me of my worries as I watch my northern neighborhood try to split hairs. We are trying to persuade each other like peacocks and forgetting that we are humans.

Peace

Racism in any form for any reason, whether overt or covert, should be repugnant. It demeans and diminishes all of us, and diminishes our collective potential.

Agreed. Racism is a topic that all people can relate with. People know that they are most comfortable when they are around their own kind. They are also proud when they accept others. Can we agree on those two things?

If we can agree then perhaps racism is not the core issue. The core issue might be acceptance. If I had to choose between racism that is discussed openly and racism that is secretive, I would choose openness.

If we also agree on openness then we can explore easier problems to solve.

I dunno. Just thinking out loud.

Agree that open discussion is preferable to covert pretense. Chances are, "we" may have more in common with a random "other" that someone that only looks like "us".

Most people have something to offer, something to impart but how will you ever know if you refuse to talk to them because their skin is a different color than yours, or if they worship at a different church/synagogue/temple?
