RIP Earl Weaver

I came across this tonight. Baltimore Oriole Earl Weaver shuffles off this mortal coil, kicking and screaming-no doubt!

"For Weaver, the strain of the game was his certainty that he was often one of the few adults in the room. “You must remember that anyone under 30 — especially a ballplayer — is an adolescent,” he once told me. “I never got close to being an adult until I was 32. Even though I was married and had a son at 20, I was a kid at 32, living at home with my parents. Sure, I was a manager then. That doesn’t mean you’re grown up.
“Until you’re the person that other people fall back on, until you’re the one that’s leaned on, not the person doing the leaning, you’re not an adult. You reach an age when suddenly you realize you have to be that person. Divorce did it to me. It could be elderly parents, children . . . anything. But one day you realize, ‘It’s me. I’ve got to be the rock.’ ”

Lotta love here! Earl was a true original and a great manager. Right now I have an image of Earl screaming his head off while kicking dirt on the umpire's shoes. :)

I loved Earl Weaver, though honestly not as much as anyone in my wife's family. She was a Junior Oriole as a kid for several years and was a regular at Memorial Stadium. In fact, she still keeps a picture of Jim Palmer and her in a big embrace while he was visiting Salisbury State (her alma mater).

Classic Weaver!

You'll see Hall of Famer Eddie Murray start arguing with the umpire over an apparent balk call by the late Mike Flanagan, who should be in the Hall). Then Weaver comes out and really pours on the coal. I think he did it partly to make sure that Murray didn't get ejected but mostly because Weaver just loved giving umpires a raft of shit.

"The 'Earl of Baltimore' will be missed. During one particular tirade with an umpire, Weaver headed to the dugout screaming, 'I'm going to check the rule-book on that' to which the umpire replied, 'Here, use mine.' Weaver shot back, 'That's no good - I can't read Braille.' "
