He's Paid his Dues, Take 2

There is an interesting discussion happening in the international legal community. The topic is one that all cultures know and it deals with when to let a person restart with a clean slate.

In the United States we have a saying about a criminal that has completed his sentence. We say that he has "done his time."

Apparently in England they say his burden is "spent".

Those discussions were fairly easy in the days of paper. Our respective societies had to decide when to throw a paper folder in the fire and, with that, the slate was wiped clean.

Computers force us to be more decisive as to when to throw data into the bit bucket fire. For example, would you be willing to be eternally rediscoverable as either one of the Finger Banger or MaryJane Rotten crotch in the following scene? Or would you rather that all tapes be destroyed after good time and you get to tell the story after that?

It's a elaboration of the right to privacy. Can you get your past life out of the public realm and into the private? This may take some pondering.

Understood. The movie "Inside Out" seeded my curiosity on the topic. That movie shines light on how we value memories. It tries to explain how memories turn grey and die and the dance we go through deciding which ones to save.
