Islam...using the proper terminology.

Saw a brief note somewhere on the web the other day, so just to insure we get our terms right...

Islam - a religion.
Islamic - pertaining to precepts, concepts, traditions, etc., of Islam. Also a person who practices Islam...is "Islamic."
Islamist - an advocate or supporter of Islamic militancy or fundamentalism...one who believes that the religion should be the basis for an entire culture, including government.

There's no such fucking thing as "Islamic terrorism." It's "Islamist terrorism."

Reckon what we oughta call a Christian supporter of Christian militancy and fundamentalism? How's about a Christianist? Christianityist? Christist? I've decided it's probably just the more generic "Christian religionist", "Jew religionist", "Hindu religionist", "Wiccan religionist", etc., depending on one's delusional choice of relgion.

But I got to thinking, for the Christian religionists what about maybe a Hutarist? And...take a look at the mug shots of this pack of militant, violent, Hutaree cretins...
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...ee_militia.jpg
Jesus christ...if hollywood put together a cast of actors to portray a pack of Hutarists...a cry would go up from all across the fruited plain. "TYPICAL HOLLYWOOD CASTING, TRYING TO MAKE US LOOK LIKE CRETINS FOR CHRIST'S SAKE!!!" But no folks...these are the real people. To be a Hutaree Christian you must have a forehead the size of the bumper on a '52 Chevy,.

Makes Mohammed Atta look downright debonair, dontcha think?

Islam is a religion that is a nation and a nation that is a religion. Muslims predate Islam.

And your point is?

A Muslim is someone who follows or practices Islam. Islam is the religion. Muslims practice Islam. There were no Muslims until the prophet began preaching the tenets of Islam.

If a terrorist says "god is great" and that god is the god of Islam an thus Islamic, it is Islamic terrorism.

Before Islam, muslims were followers of Mohammed.

Allah is the god of the book. Same god that Jews and Christians worship.

I think Islamic terrorism paints with too broad a brush.

This seems like a Seinfeld thread - a thread about nothing.

Trying for a Seinfeld riff.

I could see an atheist seeing it that way.

Great point and I had totally missed the connection, thus Musa, Isa and Mohamed in Islam. A Muslim lady from Pakistan who used to work for us explained this connection. God and religion are not my cup of tea.

The only reason there is religion is because our species developed self-awareness. The resulting fact is that as a species we can't accept death, much less all too frequent stupid, meaningless, absurd accidental death along with the violent malicious death that we perp on each other on a regular basis. Thus the almost universal delusion.

Yep, a lot of people need an artifice to help explain the inexplicable.

Religion is one of those interesting arguments - one one hand you can't prove there is a God, but on the other hand you can't prove there is not. :-)

For me it's more a question of why humans appear to need the threat of an angry god and a hell in order to treat each other, and the beasts and the children humanely?

donquixote99 08-28-2017 04:25 PM

You misunderstand. They need the threat of an angry god and hell in order to meet the needs of the priests and scribes for a comfortable living.

That makes for certain feelings on the part of some, and not on the part of others.
