Backlash against foreign worker visas.

This article cites a growing backlash against foreign worker visas.

Over the years I have wondered how Americans have been so meek
in their acceptance of this much abused system especially the one relating to
high tech industries.

The system is bias heavily against Americans and has been abused over the
years especially by Asiatic Indians.

Having come here on one of those famous H1B visas I should not wonder about a backlash. In my case it was valid as the particular topic was probably only well known to 25 individuals and the other 24 did not want the job. It served my purpose which was simply to get to Florence's side.

That said the H1B is the modern equivalent of the colonial bond servant. You are stuck with that one employer and whatever salary he agrees to pay. Now to people unfamiliar with living costs here the salaries offered may sound great but are much less than an American tech person would accept. So the business complaint that they could not find an American who could fill the position really means they could not find one who would work for that lousy salary. And Bill Gates was one who pushed for unlimited H1Bs.

Agreed. It has become a very big racket here with no end in sight.
Rob, H1B's are easily transportable and there is absolutely no long or short term commitment.

Things must have changed because mine was not, if I moved to another employer they would have to have gotten me a new one. Marriage and the green card solved all problems

Finding workers who can pass a drug test has become a big problem. Refugees don't have drug problems, thus are sought after by employers.

CNN bullshit. The crux is $8 to $14 per hour in a northern state.

I don't know about the refugees and drugs.... But I do know it's hard to find people who can pass a drug test. I was trying to hire someone for a job that paid about $60,000 a year and it took six months and three recruitments to find someone who could pass the drug test.

When I was teaching for Motorola under contract they insisted on a drug test, I asked after did it tell them which brand of gin I used in my martinis?

I get rather pissed off with this crap as all they had to do was ask me, I am not in the habit of lying.

I work with sixty people who have been passing drug tests for the past 15 years.

OTOH, I just read yesterday that vehicular deaths resulting from under the influence of drugs just passed that of DUI from alcohol.

Society has become so intolerable that many people self medicate just to make it from one week to another. Everyone is now compared the the alpha's in our society and expected to perform as such, to be perfect in every way, and if you aren't an alpha you will never be good enough. Being "human" just isn't good enough in american society any more. Bring on the martinis and lots of them.
