You Knew It was Coming

Hacked automobiles.

How idiotic do you have to be to allow wireless access to automobile control systems? Did they think "oh, it's different - hackers would never do that." ?

Did they go to college? Do they watch the news? Morons.

No one laughing at my old '80s BMWs today.

Does this mean there is technology that allows the mechanic to fix my car without me having to bring it into the shop?? 😄

This is probably tied into the OnStar system that is built into a lot of vehicles. My 2002 Silverado and 2004 Acura RL had this feature as standard equipment and it connects through the cell phone network.

Actually, yes. As with many things, it was developed in auto racing. We now have two-way communication between the pits and the car. Telemetric data is monitored from the pits and changes can be made to the car remotely. This can be both modifications to things like the fuel mixture or other performance related issues or even repairs to corrupted software.

I'm pretty sure they do similar things at your local Chevrolet dealer but with the car in the shop and a mechanic connecting equipment directly to the car. That said, I think the only things preventing remote repairs of some kinds are financial in nature. Equipment is probably pretty expensive and, if you end up having your Chevy fixed remotely from Detroit, it removes a major source of revenue for the dealers. Believe it or not, they make relatively little on the actual sale of the car but they make a ton on service.

I imagine the racers are also on the leading edge of securing their cars against unauthorized or malicious remote access....

Indeed, drive by wire systems where there is no direct link between steering wheel and wheel, or brakes and the braking system have become common in a lot of new vehicles. computers control all the systems. Hack one of these systems and you can make the car do anything you want.

Makes me not want to buy a new car.

It's the future, and it will be popular and accepted.
Otoh, 'sport' driving will endure for the time being with hands-on operation.
